You are so welcome, Linda. We've been on quite a ride together these past 7 months.

Thanks, Jeff. I feel I am getting caught up with the water situation that John and Victoria have been commenting on during the Commissioners Meetings.

Notice how Ron Allen used the word "Newcomers" in his article. I'll be there on Tuesday! And Saturday!

Rights from 170 years ago, or rights because you moved here last week -- the rights of everyone should be respected. And it is my right to look forward to seeing you twice this coming week.

notice also: "While it is understandable for unaware landowners..." implying those who do not see it his way are just unenlightened, uninformed, just don't understand. How arrogant.

The landowners I've talked to are pretty informed and aware.

Assuming their legal argument would be the County is interfering with their rights under the Boldt decision, the tribe would finally have to answer the questions that nobody will answer. The main question would be how could the tribe would justify doing something they found was unnecessary on other rivers. (Jimmycomelately, and Elwha). Then they would have two more hurdles created by the Legislatures as they have said "whereas" too much money has been spent of tributaries and riparian projects, which the Dungeness proposals contain. The lower water levels on the Dungeness will never bring the results the tribe claims they will. Lower water levels will expose the salmon to birds and the riparian projects and salmon hotels will not be able to protect them. 1.6 million spent so far and the results were an 41 percent decline in wild runs. Lack of wild most likely caused by a combination of commercial overfishing. The reality is for 50 years Tribal commercial fishing has decimated wild runs. Non tribal fisherman were never able to fish out a wild run. They were not entitled to such numbers. The tribes however were. The arguments that too much concrete or asphalt wont fly because Jimmycomelately and Elwha are chock full of road next to river scenarios. Maybe the Tribe should sue. Senator Jim Hargrove talked everybody out of it the first time. I thought that was a mistake. and still do. This time it looks like the circumstances and facts have changed which would prevent the tribe from prevailing. It could take years to sort that out on appeal to the Ninth Circuit and the Supreme Court

Interesting the paper prints a whole letter from tribe and minimizes Town road opening supporters. Yep, $ talks

I've asked several times if I could publish an op-ed. They said I could pay for an ad, at double the rate because it is "political."

Expand full comment

I wonder if "anyone else" has to pay the higher rate. I wonder if the long letter they published had to pay too...

Expand full comment

Perhaps this is one reason why small town papers are going under. They only try to make money driving what they see as "political" discourse. Yuck.

Agreed. Which way are the political winds blowing today?

Note: In-person election day for Clallam Conservation District supervisor is March 19th. The deadline for requesting a mail-in ballot was Feb. 29th. Lori DeLorem, Jamestown Tribal member and employee, is running against Judy May Larson.

Wow, I didn't know about this. I need to educate myself on the CCD, the supervisor role, and voting. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Any registered voter in the county can vote for Conservation District supervisor.

Why in the world am I just finding this out?!? Thanks Jetts.

Lori DeLorm currently serves and is running to be re elected. ( Just providing information, not advocating voting for a particular candidate.)

Long time county resident here who grew up with some in that family and know of crabbers who have interacted with them. I will never vote for a DeLorm.

I hear you. Just noting relationships between Irrigation issue, Conservation district, and tribe.

Oops. It's DeLorm (not DeLorem).

Wonder if the out of county wildlife advocates who spoke at the last Tuesday meeting would agree with the notion of reducing multispecies wildlife habitat and riparian corridors by piping the channel?

Maybe if some publicly funded private automatic gates were added. :-)

Great job ☺️. These are both important issues here. I'm very happy to see people coming together, and seeing these things, especially for what they are. I honestly didnt believe anybody was left here that actually cared. These and more issues are very thinly veiled, and I believe they are so thinly veiled because nobody does anything.

Note:

I wrote 3 long rants, before I came to this response. 🤣🤣

When the genie grants me 3 wishes, I'll ask to read those 3 rants you deleted. I think your comment hit the mark.

Lol, doubt I'll remember them, but hit me up on a bad day... You'll get the gist 🤣🤣 not that today is a bad day, its actually pretty good. ☺️

"Instead of fighting in court, our Tribe wanted to work with our neighbors and community for a common cause" and "We have been an example to others seeking a constructive alternative to litigation."

Thanks, John. Just trying to keep up with you!

It's remarkable that the tribe regularly attempts to circumvent the county processes. Obviously they have succeeded in the past and so why not continue to pull the puppet strings when it works in their favor?

They were here first. But they have Siberian DNA. That means they colonized North America. Kind of like the Siberian colonization kettle calling the European colonization pot black.

Are Cherokee Indians from India? Navajo Indians from India? Aztec Indians from India? I know historical writing that people relocated during the time of Peleg. Four generations after Noah, Genesis 10:25 records the birth of Peleg (meaning division) “for in his days was the earth divided”. So my ? is where did the Indians start out from? LIKE me the ones that are here now are native just like me. My ? is "Jamestown S’Klallam and their ancestors for thousands of years." Please prove this statement!!!

That study says 20,000 years ago. They came to "Beringia" then down to North America.

20,000 years is a guess. Still looking for historical evidence here of "Jamestown S’Klallam and their ancestors for thousands of years."

Siberian DNA has been found in tribes as far south as Oklahoma. https://www.science.org/content/article/native-americans-and-their-genes-traveled-back-siberia-new-genomes-reveal#:~:text=In%202019%2C%20researchers%20published%20work,the%20Bering%20Sea%20into%20Siberia.

There are other studies that show it could be a Polynesian to South America to North America migration. Either way the evidence shows colonization of some form

All good science say different dates for same item. They all say they are right. When the last ice age ended about 11,500 years ago = All have great guesses and all have their own dates. Just looking for some physical evidence that can show "Jamestown S’Klallam and their ancestors for thousands of years." in Clallam County.

An FYI: Yvonne Yokota, quoted in the article, is the wife of Rep. Tharinger.

Expand full comment

Fascinating... this town is so small; all the same players are coming up again and again.

Expand full comment

I think she's his ex-wife but I could be wrong. Quit Claim in county records from Tharinger to her indicating the quit claim was done to service a "dissolution" order. That was in April of 2018. Regardless, they may still be friendly and it would explain why the DLTA claimed the state rep would get involved.

Expand full comment

Tharinger has signed a "keep Towne Road closed" petition, but he didn't attach his state occupation to it.

Gosh. That's so shocking. Not.

I missed the last meeting, to my frustration, bad planning. So is it still a good idea to go to the 3/4 meeting.?

I always think more eyes on the decision-makers is a good thing (it's when we aren't watching that things go awry). I find it fascinating how impactful the decisions are that come from that boardroom, but it can be tedious at times. Don't worry if you can't make it, an update will go out tomorrow evening to catch everyone up.

Hi Jeff and others. We’ve spent a lot of time fishing & I can’t even begin to tell you how many sites comment regularly about local fishing, the waters, fish populations, the rivers, JST. We actually see what is going on out there and we are affected by all the regulations, etc. We fish mainly Neah Bay to Townsend so all the main rivers into the San Juan are at issue. Crabbing is another issue. JST created a detour tributary at the Railroad Bridge dividing the main river route into two smaller tributaries and will ultimately happen in the lower Dungeness? Creating more tributaries on the Dungeness will make it harder for fish to get upstream when the water is divided creating less water in each tributary fish have no chance of making it anywhere & will die in the river. It’s like JST creates a problem of less water for fish so they are able to say, oh look we’ll create a reservoir and control the water flow for fish we’ll fix everything. It will take more water let out of a reservoir to fill multiple tributaries rather than one main river. Good to know they used stagnation in opposition to fit their needs for other issues. I’ve seen a lot of that exact thing happen here including down right out lies, psychiatric hospital for instance flat out lied. The MAT clinic has reduced our walk-in clinic to a bare minimum. The everyday sick person, Joe blow taxpayer paying for MAT clinic services, has to go to the emergency room and pay a large bill for urgent care now thanks to the MAT clinic in Sequim. The MAT may better serve addicts, who received treatment before MAT, but it has ruined our urgent care for our community something everyone said would happen and has. Thanks Jeff for being such a light by providing a place where the much needed information can reach the community..

Once they did all that restoration work on the JCL Creek in 2019, I thought they could close down the Casino and gas station and let that area function as an outdoor classroom. It would draw the public close to the creek to watch the restoration in progress.
