Great observation. Too bad it takes a measurable quantity of guts and courage to shine a light on it, lest one be assigned the identity of 'Racist' by the Tolerant Left.
People will say this is race-baiting, as if there aren't writing-style guidelines that generally dictate these things.
Your “Why does it matter?” lens slices right to the heart of equitable storytelling: context should illuminate, not tokenize. When identity details appear without clear relevance, they shift from insight to ornament—and the audience is left wondering whose perspective the narrative is really serving.
Three threads your piece pulls into sharp focus:
1. Relevance Is a Responsibility
Identity markers can deepen understanding when they connect to the subject at hand (land use, cultural celebration, policy debate). Absent that link, they become a distraction—reminding us that inconsistency is its own form of bias.
2. Selective Labeling Breeds Mistrust
If some communities are named while others remain “default,” the subtext is loud: certain identities are still treated as qualifiers, others as invisible norms. That double standard erodes the very trust local media needs to hold power to account.
3. Equity Demands Symmetry, Not Silence
The answer isn’t to scrub stories of identity altogether; it’s to apply the same editorial rigor across the board. If heritage, politics, or faith are pertinent, spell out why—for every Shanna, Parker, and Joseph alike.
Thank you for raising the flag on subtle framing choices that ripple far beyond a single caption. Here’s to a community conversation—rooted in transparency and mutual respect—that makes our local storytelling stronger, fairer, and truer to the people it depicts.
I like that comment "insight to ornament".... like a xmas tree you don't 'see' all of the ornaments just an overall look.... sometimes thats how reading specific publications can become... without realizing it you are taking it in.... being oblivious..
Long since lost to political activists, calling themselves "actors"; actors, indeed. Racism and division are promoted in subtle ways. I never understood what racism really was, in my hometown, until I enlisted in the U.S. Navy, with the full impact being felt when I was stationed at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco. Also on my 20th birthday while aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, off the coast of North Vietnam, a confrontation broke out that lasted about a full day, which became a "race riot" as publicized in the media 9,000 miles away in my hometown newspaper and all around the world. Just for reference, there are 5,000+ personnel aboard an aircraft carrier. During our vacation, while driving to Disneyland in Anahiem, CA, we took a wrong turn passing through LA, and ended up in the war zone of the Watts Riots; a real eye-opener for a kid from sleepy liittle Port Angeles, A lot of lessons have been learned from these divisive events, and not for the betterment of humankind. Imagine the insanity of a "race riot" in the middle of the Vietnam War, not a protest back at UC Berkeley.
To some of us it doesn't matter what another person's ethnicity is, but to some others I guess it does. I wish J. Prince good luck in his business no matter his race. I don't read the PDN because of its very liberal leanings with no balance. Where's the diversity, equity, and inclusion in a community newspaper? 🤔
JKT appears to be trying to promote their status so whatever they do the public will accept it as a good thing.Creating jobs for all is going to get good reviews unless they heavily support one side.Trying to influence elected officials for benefits and taking properties off tax roll so others have to pay more will not get you positive reviews, especially when people see that mass millions have been made and saved with buisness dealings.
Why was the address of the flag lights given in the newspaper report? As a matter of safety and protection, it should have been excluded. It was very poor reporting with little regard for the individuals' personal rights and safety. "At a house in Port Angeles" would have been sufficient.
As stated in the post, mentioning tribal affiliation is not only irrelevant; it is labeling an individual as either special or different, depending on one's point of view.
For the record, I belong to a sovereign nation, too; it is called the United States of America, and my tribe is called "conservative democrat."
Definition:
A "tribe" refers to a social group of people, often related by kinship, shared culture, language, and territory. I
wow you are considered a "rare beast" with that political affiliation. I thought all politics was radicalized and extreme -- it is if you read most of the mainstream media where only the shrill and whack-o fringers get the press.
No one important, a WHITE PERSON, no longer reads the PDN, a nearly useless, one-sided publication. It only publishes feel-good articles for the shallow-thinkers.
"under the same rules"; there-in lies the problem. Different rules for anyone who has legal claim to treaty, ( not tribal ), rights. It is ironic that those who wrote the treaties and those identified in the treaties with specific rights are no longer living. So the treaty entitled and the non-treaty entitled are obligated to honor the actions of their ancestors in perpetuity. Equity and logic are both glaringly absent in that relationship. Farther down that illogical rabbit hole; in order to maintain special ancestral rights inbreeding is necessary. A practice not known to be beneficial. Regardless, I see the reason the clothing marketer was group identified is because he lives with different rules.
After many decades of monitoring this kind of selective racist & commercial garbage from the media it now always gives me an automatic sick feeling/response when I come across it. The third picture/story of Joseph Prince would have been a beautiful picture of the John Wayne marina, especially if Joseph Prince had just been posed there enjoying the view as everyone else does in that location. However, unlike the other two pictures it was spoiled by a blatant "commercial advertisement" with racist undertones for a clothing line that I found to be an extremely offensive ploy of self-promotion that was inconsistent compared to the other two pictures/stories that were clearly not promotional slaps in the face to the readers~! The premise of these pictures/stories tricked the readers into believing that it was a "feel good" effort for the community, however it obviously revealed highly questionable intentions of the local "newspaper" in question, as it is obviously a commercial and racial promotion piece in a thinly veiled disguise. I would generally support Joseph Prince and his entrepreneurial efforts as I would ALL Americans regardless of their race or gender, however I immediately see this "story" as a commercial in disguise AND the ugly promotion of the JK tribe whose tribal government has committed SO many offensive, and possibly illegal, acts that my family and many friends have been boycotting ALL of the local tribal businesses' now for several years~! So, to us, this third "story" and the picture was actually VERY creepy and would actually keep us from buying the clothing products being pushed. It was indeed an offensive "turn off"~! We actually have American Indian ancestry here in our family, so our feelings have nothing to do with racist considerations, except for the embarrassment of this sort of obvious & sad commercial advertising attempt, however the criminally corrupt media everywhere has over the decades driven us to IMMEDIATELY spot and reject any and all "ugly advertising" attempts that we come across. Especially those that "feature" extremely offensive racial and gender social engineering messaging~! I/We often wonder if these idiots in advertising, promotions, and especially the corrupt media these days have any clue that their sick social engineering games actually repel many Americans (potential consumers) that they seem to want to attract~? If you have a commercial product or service to promote, do so in an open and honest manner without childish gimmicks, offer the highest quality products or service that you can, stand behind those products & services, and for God's sake stop with the underhanded methods that create a negative feeling in the community and with the potential consumers~! If you believe that your racial makeup is more important than being an American, at least have the decency to PROVE why, so that it does not offend the vast majority of those of us who see ALL Americans as one people united in making America the best and strongest country it can be for the future generations to come~! Sincerely, Mike
Makes sense. Some people are more worthy of labels than others. Gov Fergie just signed HB #1696.
First time homebuyers that make upto 120% of the AMI have their full loan forgiven after 5 years. In other words, in Clallam County if you make upto $112,680/year and buy a house for the first time, it's yours outright after 5 years. You have to be a minority of course. No White people allowed.
I believe HB#1696 is a bad bill, but it is a loan for down payment and closing costs, not for the total mortgage. It is also totally racist, NO CAUCASIANS QUALIFY. Read it.
This is like how certain news outlets will print a picture and name of a white-male alleged criminal, but not one "of color". There is constant slanting going on to whatever the favorite slant being promoted. It is a distortion bias -- and has a long history. Not just in PRINT but in televised news.
Newspapers have floundered because of this media bias. They fail to inform people with the information necessary to make decisions. This media bias affects behaviors, and political ideology. It has become an echo chamber. Media bias is an agenda behind the message.
If you read the comments on KOMO news webpage, you'll see people calling out the media for this, as well as not disclosing judges names (especially when they hand down a particularly lenient sentence). Its a widespread bias, and "trendy" in the news media.
They don't see the problem, and that is the problem. Our media fails to educate.
What most of the people fail to realize is that government agencies and corporate entities produce many pre-packaged, fake "news" segments distributed far and wide. It is unregulated, and not disclosed. (one source: https://www.prwatch.org/fakenews/faq even though the source dates back to 2006 -- it is an accepted practice, still.)
This subtle propaganda in the media persuades people's attitude, beliefs and behaviors. It worked well to galvanize the United States (through misinformation and deceiving) to support World War ONE. (There are so many other examples and scholarly studies.)
The big question is what is the intent of this subtle mention of one tribe over another, of identification of a tribe, etc. The thing to ask yourself is WHY are they trying to shape public opinion? What is the purpose?
I always like reading what you contribute to CCWD, and I think I agree with what you posted here, but I'm not sure yet. I just have one question to help me make that determination. What race are you?
My father's family arrived on this continent in 1640 -- in New England. Fought in the Revolutionary War (on America's side). We intermarried several times with the local tribes (St. Regis Mohawk/Iroquois Nation). On my Mother's I'm from immigrants from Germany/Finland/France. (Jewish tribe through my Maternal Grandmother.) My Finnish grandfather had to flee when his family was slaughtered during the Russification of Finland -- and the few surviving children shipped to NYC.
That's a very interesting history, but it doesn't help me. You are part Native American and part Colonizer, so I don't know if your opinion is right. This next line of questioning will help me:
1) Are you currently wearing a "Be Kind" button on your shirt?
2) Do you have a yard sign that says, "Hate is not allowed here" or something to that effect?
3) If you have a business, do you have a sign on the door that says gay people are allowed to seek refuge there if they are being attacked in the street? (I ask because I'm gay and can never keep track of what businesses will let me in when I'm being assaulted).
Hello, It seemed the signal cutout yesterday. Something after the domian (.com) was placed into the URL: -cutoffthepress. I am trully sorry that we could not continue our epistolary convo, due to events that seem "postmodern" if you get my literary drift?
"Oh ok. I get it. You're not here to answer questions. And there are outlets that cover non-american topics. France24, Aljazeera, NHK, or dare I say - not exactly foreign- EPOCH TIMES!?
You are right, Ms. Mimi. The media is owned by a handful of corporations, narrowing media to convenient short clips and blogs designed for mere minutes of reading - the leading (or bleeding?) edge of information in our time.
"She spoke of the media. The Media. Sensationalism. The narrowing of thought. Of parrots teaching parrots, and whales straining krill through a sea of digital media...click. Click. CLICK... and a hymn was heard, maybe more so a hum: "The media lies, the system fails, the schools dumbed us down..."
You say this with fervor as if you just escaped Plato's cave with nothing but the aid of a wifi signal. But You and I have met here at the not-so-disinterested hand that selects which drop of blood to drip. A blog that replicates the very thing you condemn:
"Who's really running the City of Sequim?"
"We will not be silenced (but you might)"
That's local fear dressed up as populist rebellion. A tasty TV dinner. Cheap and easy.
"Mimi stood outside the cave but she did not keep walking. She turned to face the cave, discovering her own shadow and a soft light glowing amongst the darkness. Now she knew that it wasn't darkness in the cave but a lack of signal. She walked back into the cave now perceving that others were present, that they must have always been alongside her. Their faces were dimly lit by there, in the corner... had there always been a corner?... the source was pulsing, and updated daily. A blog... no, a forum that seemed so "real". Its flickers promised lost freedom, secret meetings and tribal handshakes once obscured by the dark were plainly seen but only within the light radiating from the screen. She triumphantly said to herself, "This is the age of curated bleeding"! She became not a puppet or a shadow but something else...She clicked and shared, linked and warned. She said "wake up", but to only lead them deeper."
Even blogs have an agenda. The MO of this site, of social media, is to seek followers. And the more you repeat the mantra "the media lies, the system fails, the schools dumbed us down - (as an aside: I feel like that might be an indictment of when you graduated cuz I am dealing you, Plato's cave dweller) - the more you risk becoming another echo chamber, just nodding along to a narrative of someone is selling, or looking for blood. That's not journalism, that's just another TV channel of a televangelist prophet who never left the projection booth.
So remember: If this blog starts bleeding too, don't pretend it's something purer. It's just that digital ink is cheaper.
Citizen K - Home Cook, Voter, Avid Reader, and not an idealogue.
Jeez dude. You're over there in the dark corner waxing poetically in LP fashion with focus on Mimi. What are we to think? Are you going to ask her out already, or just keep playing coy?
This situation has leaned so far to not offend, that writers are in fear of captions that do not include tribe affiliation. It’s crazy, but on the other hand, I didn’t care who the people were identified under the two other pictures. Names did not increase my interest.
Yep... this is exactly the contradiction many of us have seen play out more and more over the past 30+ years that leaves us wondering less about "Why does it matter" than about "Why would they do this?". The fact is the woke mind virus is behind all of it. It wasn't always so clear to see, but now it's undeniable. These media corporations, and many fortune 500 corporations, were captured by woke, communist liberals who have been attempting to socially engineer our entire society. The call everyone racist, when it is they who are the racists.
Did you contact the paper to ask why they noted the tribal affiliation? Does that align with their editorial standards for how they decide what is relevant information to include in photo captions? I don't have a major problem with it, but I do think it shows a potential inconsistency in what they consider relevant information for the three photos. Perhaps t was considered relevant if they were tied to a story? I did not see if these were "standalone" photos or part of a related article.

Well, I can say for certain we never had slaves, just indentured Irish servants.
I have enough blood quantum to have been tribally accepted before they built a huge casino. Now, I don't cut the grade.
Absolutely, come on by, I can always use some fabulous decorating tips.

Did you contact the paper to ask why they noted the tribal affiliation? Does that align with their editorial standards for how they decide what is relevant information to include in photo captions? I did not contact the paper. I should have specified, they were standalone photos. Not connected to a larger story.
Thanks for clarifying. Since they were "standalone" photos without additional context, the inconsistency stands out a bit more.
Good point, and good catch. Thank you.
