I see some similarities between Towne Road and this issue.

Commissioner Ozias halted Towne Road because he had "hundreds of signatures" wanting it closed and only one phone call wanting the road to stay open (people weren't calling Ozias because nobody knew he was about to pull the plug on the project). In City Manager Nathan West's trust land transfer application, he said the office had received thousands of messages asking for the parcels to remain unharvested but no messages supporting the harvest of timber (again, why contact local government about something that has been communicated as being a done deal). It's a disingenuous way to collect and present data when building a case.

“Twelve years have passed since $351.4 million was spent on a project that removed two dams on the Elwha River. Now, Port Angeles Mayor Kate Dexter worries about the Elwha’s water availability, which is her city's primary water source.”

I love seeing more transparency in our news recently. The elephant in the room here is the fact that two dams were knocked down that held the major water storage for the city of Port Angeles.

I’m convince that the extreme environmentalist just want to wipe humans off the map.

Once again, an excellent exposé. It's a bit of the "environmentalist" position vs science. I'm all for being environmentally friendly in a balanced and scientific way. Let's do that based on facts and let's remember that humans are here and we need water, housing, jobs to survive. The de-population nuts can de-populate first. :-)

I'm hoping Mr. Johnson perseveres to another term. He and French appear to be focusing on the right things without the over-hyped-word-salad voice of Ozias. Kudos to them for having their facts in order about the DNR process. Timber is part of this county's history and can continue to survive in a responsible way. They've proved it.

Shame on Ms. Dexter for not having the facts before making her request. And the "condescending email"....was a copy available or were those Ms. Dexter's words?

Thanks A.J. Those were her words and I haven't seen it the email... It's probably in PA public records, and I've never gone looking there. I think I'll edit that and put it in quotes, "condescending".

As an agency that works responsibly to manage our Forrest’s it is an insult to allow a person in a “responsible” position to ignorantly address a situation ... a condescending response was gracious!

It would not surprise in the least if the letter was NOT condescending but simply factual and informative in a way that educated Ms. Dexter. Some people don't like to be educated if it doesn't fit their tenuous positions on things like water, roads, jobs, etc.

An educated reply obviously left her feeling as though it was too harsh… “… uhhh. Science doesn’t prove anythinggg.” This is what happens when people are parrots! Like you’ve said “tenuous”… omgosh!

Gosh darn it! I didn't want this read to end...really interesting and educational. Dexter is doom and gloom for our county if she unseats Johnson. Thank you, Jeff, for your hard work and diligence getting the truth through transparency exposed.

Me either...😔...but on the other hand there is nothing like a shooting match on Sunday morning, hearing about how these people love shooting themselves in the feet! 😂😂😂

Ozias would have excellent company in Dexter. Two wrongs make a greater wrong.

Exactly, Billy...the two of them on the BOC scares the crap out of me!

Oh but wait there is more (I think)... wasn’t the Elwa dam capable of providing electricity to the area at some point. Now we totally rely on the Bonneville Dam

For our power.. if we all leave this will be a tribal ghost town if even that!

Your memory is right, but I forget how many homes or mills that dam powered.

I moved here 12 1/2 years ago and was absorbing as much info as possible about current doings then. Removing the dams seemed logically like a bad idea to me due to the need for more clean energy and water supply. The county was growing fast then. How could these have not been a higher priority than fish spawning? Now PA is seeing the direct impact of this wasteful spending project. Sad, really.

My understanding about State Forest land timber sales revenue is that it applies to school facilities construction. Curriculum, operating expenses and payrolls are to be paid with other state revenues and voter approved Levy revenue.

Idiots do what idiots do, especially if egged on by the Tribes. Now, the brainiacs want to do the same thing to 4 dams on the Snake River, and parched California just REMOVED dams instead of adding new ones. Is there lead in the water they drink?

It's great to be back!! Another rousing read from Jeff! Being from California, I can attest that I voted for every measure and was taxed on the passed measures to repair old dams, build new dams, and build reservoirs. And...and...and...still waiting. I see the same old tired bait-n-switch happening in WA. Gov. Inslee is a monkey see, monkey do, coat tail follower of Gov. Newsom. And I agree, Jeff, there are similarities between Towne Road and the Elwa Dam project. Keen eye! After reading this article, I was impressed with Com. Johnson and Com. French. Stay with the people of CC. See you Tuesday.
