When will people realize that we can not shrink our way to prosperity. The natural resources of our area must be leveraged for our economic future. I am all for reasonable regulations, but it seems like we keeping hurting ourselves. Timber, fishing, and now tourism are under attack. And the tribes need to help, not hinder. Our largest employers are already tax funded (OMC, city, county, schools, NPS, CG) and they are struggling with budgets, crumbling infrastructure, and limited additional help from the State or Federal governments. We keep taxing more those that remain here, but I am skeptical this can continue. I am not a political person, but being progressive used to about making “progress”. Our community seems to be stuck in a nostalgia loop with few people looking forward. We need real leadership that is transparent, sets future goals, and holds itself accountable. It shocks me that PA’s drafting of an updated Comprehensive Plan seems to prioritize affordable housing, while economic growth is a an afterthought. The majority of PA households exist at or below 80% of AMI. We desperately need private industry to create real jobs. I was recently surprised by the presentation on Coffee with Colleen from Sequim’s City Manager, and Community and Economic Development and Public Utility staff. It was professional, forward looking, optimistic, and quantified real changes underway. I have not seen anything similar to this from Port Angeles.
It's the new way of elected leaders, and those running NGOs, to buy votes or wield power. Federal and state money is easier to obtain than focusing on an economy and letting those substantive changes generate the funds society needs.
If we can stop the federal funding we can at least stop the advantages.
We need the new solicitor Generals to step in and arrange for our 14 years of reparations for having the NODC etc make sure we came last because we were this terrible colonizer.
I think the Tribes want to turn the Olympic Peninsula into a ghost town, where they can pick up the real estate for pennies on the dollar. The Tribes do not want successful businesses and growth-- they want the opposite and they have our politicians in their pockets to ensure it. They're playing Cowboys and Indians, but this time they have all the weapons.
They sit at our tables in public hearings and policy planning on a trail committee..
We need to be able to sit in the federal and NGO level table too.
The pictures on Elwha shows exactly what the Dungeness would look like if the NODC cabal has its way. They needed to eliminate the ditch capacity and now they want to supplement the rain shadow to create that kind of event. Reckless meandering they dont want on their lands. The Elwha is missing the entire right side of its estuary where the reservations buildings are. Funny how their estuary restoration grants got spent on climate migrants and property buy outs. instead..The flooding upstream past the old Altaire was planned. That's a planned meandering zone. Now they are coming right down the middle of the Dungeness and have that area planned for flooding. FEMA even chipped in grant money to help create a community flood plan....right in your own community.
I'm truly surprised no one has tried, or if they have been successful, at stopping government's use of NGOs as a firewall to information and the scrutiny of public inspection.
We should always take into consideration the HONEST wishes and concerns of all members of our society when planning a public project, however allowing special interest groups to have the power to deceive, manipulate, control and dictate when and how public projects are designed, built, and operated is more often than not contrary to the greater public benefit~! I found it VERY suspicious when our wonderful visitor center burned down to begin with, however as a lifelong analyst of criminal behavior my suspicions have been reinforced by the ridiculous obviously contrived delays that have plagued the rebuilding project, the foot dragging of the currently empowered Individuals involved, their supposed inability to answer simple straight forward common-sense questions, and the never-ending "complications" that keep being piled onto such a simple process that can obviously be easily completed within a short timeframe if competent Individuals of Goodwill are put in charge. Many residents in the Sequim area deeply resent the numerous notorious projects that have been forced down our throats by the government and the local Indian tribe like the unnecessary drug treatment center, the mental health center, the intentionally delayed,, expensive and overcomplicated Towne Road improvements, and now a highly questionable dam & water reservoir project that would create further concerns for many folks long into the future. With all of these dubious projects that have been rammed through without any real honest consideration for the will of the public, we have to ask "why" the simple rebuilding of this lodge is "suddenly" such a deeply complicated and highly contested project? Obviously a new, bigger and better lodge should be constructed that can properly showcase our great natural asset for the local residents and folks from all over the world to enjoy, especially one that will allow for a full-time security staff to be present to make sure that the project remains safe and secure from any criminal behavior, but I personally enjoy and appreciate that the area basically remains a natural beauty free from any disfiguring large scale commercial development. With the constant push by the always corruptive "Chamber of Commerce" in their usual never-ending national drive to harm local residents all over the US in favor of the tourism dollar, we must resist allowing commercial developments of our beautiful natural wonders that offer an opportunity for Individuals to visit an unchanged land as it has been for a very long time. There will always be those who have problems with any project, especially those who seek more & more power and control that they have absolutely no lawful Constitutional rights to, but at some point, the general public's welfare must be our guiding force, and the "opposition" must be completely rejected regardless of their usual lies, deceptions, threats, extortion attempts, and hysterical tantrums~! Unfortunately, America now has generations of spoiled brats who are the direct products of "The Permissive Society" who don't understand the meaning of "No" or having their emotions rejected in favor of the general public's overall well-being, so obviously "we" (Americans) must now educate these pampered Individuals on exactly how to behave in a country where they will no longer get their way (especially by causing and creating trouble for the rest of us). Build the new bigger & better lodge with an emphasis on serving the local residents needs first and foremost and then to accommodate the many visitors that we should welcome to share OUR natural treasure with us~! Get it planned and under construction right away without concern of what the usual troublemakers will cause because they need to understand how to deal with their own emotional instabilities and personal disappointments. The new common law system needs to be fully embraced for Americans to have the freedoms that they are due, for each community to provide the best experience possible for its residents, and to correct the ugly path of our own government and judicial systems being used against us by those who do not honor or respect our American freedoms and rights~! We have seen MASSIVE amounts of our tax dollars being stolen & wasted on people and other countries, so obviously there is more than enough money to improve the lives and communities of Americans if "we" stand up against this abusive corrupt system that has underserved Americans for many decades now~! Build the new lodge bigger, better, and safer without further delays~!!!
Hello my friend~! Great points~! Yes, I think my "favorite" asinine waste that these morons in government came up with was the "study" of the shrimp running on the treadmill, because my sense of humor has always kept me from making RAMBO look like a seamstress in a retirement home for old Lady's~! Ha! Of course, when the American general public finds out what the criminals in the US government have really been funding in Ukraine, and especially that much of those Billions of dollars have actually been funneled right back to the evil criminals in the US government and the Military Industrial complex to continue murdering more Americans in their ongoing Genocidal attack, I think a lot of those "old Lady's" may just drop their knitting needles and become "RAMBO's" themselves~! Never underestimate the little old Lady's here in the Pacific NW, because they could be packing a 357 Magnum and know just how to use it~! :-() Anyway, yes, the criminals in government have weaseled their own little perpetual never-ending theft machine, where if they don't constantly demand more & more money and spend every bit of it every year, they know that they won't get as much money to waste~! Worse, these criminals don't just wait for problems to claim that they need more & more money for every year, they more often than not make small problems worse to be able to scream for more & more money! In fact, if there is no problem, sooner or later the criminals in government will actually create problems to demand more & more money for, so "we" are in a viciously insane never-ending government fleecing machine of the criminals in government's own design, where the problems are NEVER intended to be solved, because the scam artists in government know if they ever really solved any problems that they would lose funds and power~! Sadly, it is a lot like the corrupt medical industrial complex, where if they really started to cure folks, they know that they would not need the expensive drugs and that healthy patients would no longer need them~! Fortunately, many changes have already started happening behind the scenes, the smarter criminals are already retiring, getting out of "dodge", or being "retired" by criminal prosecutions, so "we" (Americans) can expect to "suddenly" see some very positive changes even before January 20th comes~! ;-) After January 20th I sure would not want to be one of these lifelong criminals in government or one of their evil corrupt counterparts in big business ;-) I wonder just how many of these slime ball criminals will be dressing like illegal aliens to blend in with those who will soon be forming the great exodus across the border and OUT of the US within the next few months??? Hang in there because this is no game and VERY serious actions and consequences are coming to those who have committed Treason and crimes against humanity unlike anything ever witnesses in the human experience to date~! Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours~!!! Sincerely, Mike
My suspicions also spiked when I heard about a fire burning the lodge to the ground. I appreciate this article, Jeff, as so much of our area's beauty and charm come from ONP. Blessings and gratitude to all this Thanksgiving.
If our senators Cantwell and Murray who are senior in the Senate wanted to help they would have... We, WA, are NOT top of mind to use their silly all too oft used expression... You get what you vote for WA...
Thank Jeff. I have not been to Hurricane Ridge since the fire, and used to enjoy the trip.
sovereignty:
Supremacy of authority or rule as exercised by a sovereign or sovereign state. Royal rank, authority, or power. Complete independence and self-government.
How can we the people of Tribe USA give up our supreme authority to another and at the same time retain it? Can't.
THANKS, Jeff...my question was finally answered, but certainly not how I expected...here is a copy of my three unanswered requests regarding Hurricane Ridge Lodge...
THIRD REQUEST...Evidently Superintendent Jacob either can't or won't answer my question...who can or will?
How much was the Hurricane Ridge Lodge insured for when it burned to the ground? Will the insurance proceeds be added to the $80 million to be used to rebuild the Hurricane Ridge Lodge which has been allocated in the White House’s $56 billion domestic supplemental budget?
They need $50 million to rebuild the visitors center??? Out of what? Gold? They could build a 10,000 sq ft visitors center at $1000/sq ft, and only spend $10M! And, wouldn't a 5000 sq ft center (or less) be sufficient? Into whose pockets is the remaining $40-45 million earmarked for?
How much electricity has been lost due to the removal of the dam, so that the Tribes can gill net another 10% of their catch? Where does all that extra money from the resurrected salmon go?
And, what's with all these meetings, hearings, and plannings without the tax-paying public being privy to them?
I am beginning to think that BS is flowing down the Elwah instead of rain water and snow melt.
I find this very upsetting. I feel like the tribes are totally tacking advantage of the people who support them. I also feel there will be a rebellion against the tribes and resentment if trajectory continues.
Bingo! The original idea in Congress was to give them a break, let them hunt and fish on their lands as they always had. Instead, nowadays, they wantonly decimate the salmon harvest with illegal (to us) gill nets, don't pay taxes, run casinos which non-Tribal people cannot, then use their abundant cash to buy and influence our politicians to give 'em more and more.
They got the Elway dam removed for the fish. They got several dams removed in northern California for the fish. They want to remove 4 dams on the Snake River, for the fish. You want to know a MUCH cheaper and simpler solution? Make the Tribes follow the same 2-fish limit as the rest of us do. They never made livings raping the fish harvest-- the rights they were given by Congress was for sustenance. And running casinos was not in the minds of Congress when these "reparation" laws were written. It is long past time to revisit the entire law and let the Tribes follow the same laws as the rest of us.
If you want to understand the more aggressive stance/policies that our Federal government is pursuing you need not look further than Deb Haaland. Now of course she is leaving when the current administration exits, but the systemic changes are here to stay unless the incoming administration can change course. Time to stop long enough in your day to write a letter to whoever replaces her when that decision is final.
It’s always all about the money. I wonder what the Park budget looks like these days? Perhaps the tribal consult is the answer to the park’s money woes?
That’s funny. The tribe is the Democrats’ priority. They’ve shown over and over again that they put everyone ahead of the constituents they’re actually elected to represent. The tribe voted for them because they enjoy the advocacy and Democrats reap the benefits in the form of kickback from NGO board positions, and business connections. I hope the economic waste clean up begins day one of this administration. I agree the DOGE should know how our dollars are being used/wasted/transferred.
Funny that they are talking about artifacts in that area when in 1889-90 the Press Expedition couldn't get native guides because the Indians were afraid to go up into the Olympics because Gods lived up there.
Thank you for poking in to this topic. I searched, to no avail, as to what Archeological sites 45CA302 and 45CA487 are, and was unable to find any information on them. For a community that seems to put heritage and culture at their forefront, they seem to be pretty secretive as to what these sites are, makes you wonder... I find it hard to believe that a culture that has based their identity on canoes, fishing and whaling would have much reason to hike 18 miles into the mountains.
It even states in the Park's memorandum that there is no known human remains in the area. I am just at a loss to what could be so important, yet so sensitive to the public.
New Fee to Trust Regulations: I believe we are in more danger of losing lands and water rights (and more) than we realize. "On Dec 12,2023, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) finalized new regulations for taking fee lands into trust...that allows the Secretary of the Interior to take lands into trust on behalf of Federally recognized tribes or individual Indians..."
The Final Rule aims to further tribal self-determination and self-governance in the land acquisition process by setting deadlines for BIA actions and clarifying the streamlining the process. Before, it took approximately over 2.5 years to finalize the Fee Lands into Trust. The new rule establishes a 120-day time frame to issue a decision.
RED FLAG WARNING CLALLAM COUNTY: One of the rule improvements states it, "no longer requires the Secretary of the Interior to take into consideration impacts to state and LOCAL TAXES for on-reservation or contiguous acquisition UNLESS the state or LOCAL GOVERNMENT RAISES SUCH CONCERNS.
So far, I haven't read, (in any of the past actions by the county concerning benefits to The Tribe) any actions they have taken to represent non-tribal citizens and the presented legitimate concerns.
More alarming is that we aren't informed of time frames and legal options, but are blocked and stalled until it is too late. I believe acquisitions of the land, water and businesses by the Tribe will turn Clallam County into areas of Tribal Monopolies.
But wait! There's more! (as the commercials says) I believe this Tribe has found its niche and under (google 2016 COMPREHESIVE PLAN - jamestowntribe.org) pages 13 and 14 and 18 are right on tract for Tribal Land Consolidation. As outlined, "It has been the Tribe's intent from that time forward to continue acquiring lands for rebuilding the Tribe's land base and for future development as they become available: for instance, by in-filling between the Campus and the southwestern edge of the Blyn basin." ..."At some time in the future, all of this property will likely be in reservation/trust status, and therefore no longer under the jurisdiction of Clallam County or the State of Washington." This Tribe has grow legs since 2016 and are running faster than we can keep up with. Please note the land base on page 14. (This area was approved by the United States Department of the Interior as the place in which the Tribe will concentrate land acquisition and economic development efforts, and within which lands may be designated as Tribal trust land...(Page 18)

I don't have the temperament do deal with this political corruption and BS. I'd likely pull out a weapon and go after them, LOL!

It’s always all about the money. I wonder what the Park budget looks like these days? Perhaps the tribal consult is the answer to the park’s money woes?

I hope the economic waste clean up begins day one of this administration. I agree the DOGE should know how our dollars are being used/wasted/transferred.
Let's give her a chance to represent us. It's a new world.
Funny that they are talking about artifacts in that area when in 1889-90 the Press Expedition couldn't get native guides because the Indians were afraid to go up into the Olympics because Gods lived up there.
How do you keep track of all these random but very useful facts?!?
Thank you for poking in to this topic. I searched, to no avail, as to what Archeological sites 45CA302 and 45CA487 are, and was unable to find any information on them. For a community that seems to put heritage and culture at their forefront, they seem to be pretty secretive as to what these sites are, makes you wonder... I find it hard to believe that a culture that has based their identity on canoes, fishing and whaling would have much reason to hike 18 miles into the mountains.
You're welcome, Greg. One more mystery to add to the list.
I left my comment on their public comment page. If there is anyone else interested in reading the info and leaving a comment for the park. You can find it at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?documentID=140563
You are out-researching me and I love it!
