Thanks for pointing this out Jeff. I think it’s something that’s been going on for so long many of us just look right past that stuff, don’t even notice it, though we absolutely should. When you start looking at all these smaller items they sure add up. We go to support the local youth sports whenever we can. I guess my white butt does more wear and tear than others.

Adam, you are correct. My pet peeve is the fact that the tribal clinics can receive more Medicare reimbursement than non-tribal clinics.Up to twice as much in some cases.Hard to compete with that. Port Angeles hospital financial problems. Not for more government spending, however should be level playing field.Tough for doctor to open a practice.

Jeff, I read the”Equitable” post and I got a wave of nausea . I grew up in the south and that feeling of people being equal but still separated in groups,

brought back a visceral reaction.

I'm all for equity as defined in the US Constitution. It is unlawful to discriminate based on color, nationally, religion, etc. I believe DEIB is unlawful.

Expand full comment
Paul Schmidt's avatar

Indeed, this qualifies as discrimination. It's one thing for a private business to offer race-based discounts; it's another matter entirely for a tax-payer funded institution to do so.

Lots of guilt-laden, college-indoctrina. . .oops, college-educated whites trying to appease the poor Indians.

As a member of tribe USA I should receive a discount. Would I need a passport?

Why not just call it for what it is 'prejudice' what would happen if it was the other way around?you would never hear the end of the belly aching.Tribal members that work get that income plus free govt taxpayer $$$ and discounts, now who is at the disadvantage?there are laws on the books about buisnesses having 'unfair buisness practices'but are never considered when tribes are involved.DEI is just a smoke screen for perverted people getting hired for recognition.just look at how this came about and who started it.If the top educational supervisors are going to support DEI-CRT-WOKE this going to lead to trouble, more home schooling-private charter schools, trump got voted in because of this perverted garbage.

With this being the focus, it's no wonder kids are failing. I also wonder how much of their budget is spent on this garbage. Do they have a "DEIB" director?

Why wouldn't it just say "Senior Citizens (+65) and leave it at that? Wherever I have been entitled to a Senior Citizen discounts all I had to prove was that I was old enough and a citizen and of course not my nationality. I'm hoping it is an oversight and will be corrected.

I called the district office and asked if it were "Tribal Senior Citizen" or just "Tribal" of any age. They told me tribal members of any age get the discount.

Lori you are correct. She wasn't sitting behind the white section where she belonged nor would she stand up to allow the white people to sit when the bus got too crowed. I fudge history a bit ; )

As a former school administrator I would not have supported such a discount based on tribal affiliation. It would make more sense to me to provide discounts to families, who qualify for free or reduced price school lunches, which is easy to document for a school. That would be more inclusive and targeted at people, who could use a little financial boost.

I believe this pollyannish stride for equality is both fruitless and naïve. Minority status is ubiquitous. It can never not exist. Each of us are biologically unique, making each of us a minority of one. Using discrimination to end discrimination is like waging a war to end all war. The message given to those who Government chooses to charitably support is that they are lacking and cannot succeed without charity. Let's go with today's black for example. Admittedly I would not qualify as black, but I am suffering from media and societal black fatigue. BLM, BET, innumerable black organizations and even our latest Super Bowl half time entertainment was exclusively black. Putting all of the black organizations, DEI, MWBE, OMWBE, and the multitudes of Governmental "minority" agencies aside, take the end game to it's logical conclusion. The inordinate amounts of resources invested in black, ( whatever that is ), prevail and being black is no longer a minority. Are we done ? Did we succeed in eliminating minority status ? If black is the majority, something else is now a minority. Ironically, having darker skin tone is a majority status on earth. Ancestry, gender and skin tone are meaningless in determining one's societal value, but they are effective in dividing and polarizing. Even when we invest in generic things like youth or poverty they continue to exist. When you consider the statement "get a life" is it a criticism or is it encouragement ?

If the Tribe is inferior to Whites, Blacks, Asians, and others, and is so impoverished that they need a helping hand to attend an event, then maybe the Tribe should spend less on real estate and buying politicians and give some of that money to those inferior, impoverished, inept Tribal members that cannot afford an extra $2 like the rest of the world.

This is blatant racism that declares Tribal members to be inferior of others and should have no part in our society. If we are all EQUAL, then pay the same as everyone else and end this bullshit!

Why does the district have 6 price categories? Family 20, Adult 7, Student with ASB (no SHS) 5 are all you need K-5 free Why complicate a simple system. Once again the fact that "Tribal" is classified as a type is misleading. Based on common definitions all peoples can fall in to the "tribal classification" The "class of tribal" is typically referred to as a tribe itself, which describes a group of people sharing a common culture, language, and ancestry, often with a sense of shared identity and political organization within a community. The reference in the article is really for "indigenous people." Just saying.

In the fiscal year 2023-2024 (which is outdated now) there were 110 Sequim School district employees that made over $100,000. There were another 52 employees that made between $80,000 and $99,000. Another 45 employees made between $58,000 and $79,000. The average salary of everyone in WA state is $58,000 and I'm sure it's lower in Clallam County. Equity apparently does not mean making sure that government employees make as much as the taxpayers paying their salaries. Equity means making sure that government employees make more.
